When concrete is poured, it is in a somewhat liquid state. Sometimes, a specific texture or shape is desired. In either instance, a form is often used. Concrete contractors use a number of different forms, and you can learn more about five of them by reading below.
Wood Forms
Wood forms are extremely common in the concrete industry and are beneficial when you need a lightweight form in a specific area. Wood can easily be worked into a desired size and shape, making it perfect for smaller projects. Plywood is frequently used with the wood for the sheath on the inside of the form.
Plastic Forms
Plastic forms are designed to be reusable since they are made of interlocking parts, which is why these types of forms are incredibly popular with concrete contractors. This feature also makes them eco-friendly. Plastic forms tend to be the most ideal forms for large and simple shapes. They are also lightweight, making them easy to move. Plus, they're easy to clean.
Insulated Concrete Forms
These types of concrete forms tend to be used primarily in the formation of a building's foundation. They are constructed from an insulating material and are then placed around the slab to form a sandwich with the middle being the poured concrete. Unlike other forms, insulated concrete forms don't need to be removed and simply remain in the foundation.
Steel Forms
While heavier than wood, forms made out of steel can be used over and over again—hundreds of times, even—and offer the most effective, long-term solution for use for contractors. These particular forms offer a smooth finish and don't degrade or absorb moisture the way that wood forms do. They are also easy to put together and take apart when you are finished with them.
Wall Forms
Wall forms are constructions from a combination of wood and steel. They tend to be used to create foundations and walls, and they are held in place by pins or latches. Wall forms are available in a variety of shapes and sizes, and they come pre-made. Some manufacturers offer custom sizes, which allows them to be used for unique and unusual designs.
